This course is for students who are passionate about fashion. The programme will nurture your creativity and develop your understanding of fashion and style as well as delivering the skills required to manufacture, present and market your work.
First year practical briefs introduce and develop design language, drawing and illustration, research abilities, pattern cutting, and garment construction. Analysis of historic and contemporary applications of dress design help to inform the practice.
The second year will encourage you to look at the broader picture in order to gain an informed understanding of the fashion and textile industry. This includes short options covering retailing and marketing, fashion illustration, fashion photography, styling, fashion PR and journalism. You will of course continue to refine your cutting and design skills and are introduced to more advanced technologies utilised in the manufacturing process. Short periods of work placement are included in the second year programme.
In your final year you have the opportunity to develop and agree more personalised negotiated briefs. Most will utilise the year to work towards the production of a major collection of garments for presentation in the end of year show. Others may want to present their final major project in an appropriate form in a cognate area building on the broader range of skills developed in the second year of the programme.
The course includes study visits, work placement opportunities and visiting professionals. All students are encouraged to enter the various competitions.
At the end of the course you should be a confident and independent individual who is able to work well in teams. You will be a creative problem solver, good communicator and alert to issues surrounding ethical production and sustainability in fashion.
