Course Description

Ads are the cave art of the 20th century, according to Marshall McLuhan. And maybe he’s got a point, with marketing one of the most contentious, intriguing and creative areas in business and management.

Studies of attitudes towards marketing suggest that the public holds marketing, and particularly advertising, in high regard. Yet some have accused marketing of manipulation, exploitation and falsehood. All agree, however, about its importance in today’s culture.

It’s all about exchange, and the pursuit of mutually satisfying, long-term relationships between customers and ‘organisations’. They both seem seductively simple initially, but rapidly become intriguingly complex. We’ll challenge you with tough issues and stretch your imagination as you learn the craft of marketing and communications.

You’ll start by gaining an understanding of marketing and how it influences society and individuals. As the course continues you’ll develop your talents in advertising and public relations and in your third year have the chance to take a paid work placement, and apply the skills you’ve learned.

In your final year, you’ll hone your campaign planning skills. Alongside each year of study you will have the opportunity to select specialist option pathways — further enhancing your marketing and communications talents that are demanded by today’s employers.
